a letter to my daughter on her birthday

December 12, 2019family, life

Dear Evelyn,

When we chose your name, we decided to move forward with it because it meant “wished for child.”  I hope you know you are loved, prayed for, and so wanted.  You wake up everyday ready to conquer the world with enthusiasm and a very sweet smile.

For your birthday party, there were dollar store decorations with unicorns, a cake that your Dad made you, and an assortment of food from Costco.  I made chili, mac and cheese, and hot cocoa that I totally burned (yup, you can do that).  We put you in an unicorn onesie that was probably getting its last wear, and I put a unicorn crown on you that my mom friend Stella gave you for your party.

We told people no presents required, but we’d love to see them;  I’ve never seen so many presents at a birthday party.  Our friends came in our house and there were babies and parents playing everywhere.  When we were singing happy birthday to you, I wanted to pause time.  So much has changed in the last year.  I’m more than I ever knew I could be because of knowing you.  You made me a Mom and my whole life trajectory has been changed because of it.  I have experienced a depth of joy and love I did not know possible.

Devin blew out your candle, and I held a wish for you in my heart.

At one, you can’t wish for much besides having your daily needs and newly minted preferences met.  However, at one, I wish for you that we can help you become the individual God made you to be.  You are bright, happy, and extroverted.  We may see you stay close or move far away, but I do know as you get older there will be more gifts, personality traits, and talents that you have to shine on this world.

The house was full of cheering when you started smashing your cake.  I hope people are always there, even beyond us, to cheer you on for your accomplishments.  I hope there are always people there to help you up when times are hard.  Either way, your Dad and I will always be there with unconditional love for you.

I told Devin that we only have 17 more birthdays with you.  I often tell you that you are the shiniest star in my sky, and you are.

We love you.
