before and after bathroom vintage vanity

July 28, 2016home
When we moved in our home, our bathroom vanity was crusty. We ended up completely changing the way it looked. Check it out! | via Autumn All Along

Fixing up this bathroom vanity has been on my goals list since we moved into our first home in August 2013.  It has been the thing we’ve always pushed off and an eye sore the rest of the time.  Half of the knobs were broken on the vanity and it had never been sanded or stained.  The previous owners left stains all over the wood that had soaked into the wood where I couldn’t clean it off.  It drove me crazy every time I walked past it in a pretty neurotic kind of way.

We took the rest of the knobs off, pulled out all of the drawers, unhinged the doors, taped up the walls and put plastic down.  We have never stained anything before so it was definitely an adventure.  We found a few things: wood stain bleeds through tape sometimes and does some really weird looking stuff to your hands.  It was a little difficult getting the doors the same color as the rest of the wood, but we figured it out, and we were happy to see the wood complimented our hardwoods in the hall just like we hoped it would!

We had a hard time finding knobs we liked.  By we, I mean that I had a hard time.  Devin was pretty much like “here are some metal ones, I’m good.”  Husband of the year award goes to Devin for driving me all over God’s green earth and then suggesting World Market to find these knobs.  I LOVE the knobs, but also I am finding I really like the warmth of the wood because it balances all of the cool tones in the bathroom.

The colors were off with my “taken in the night time with my iPhone photos” so here ya go with a photo from my real camera ðŸ™‚ .

This was our first DIY project together outside of painting rooms together.  I loved having the time with Devin, being able to work on the same project, and how the room looks now!  My favorite part is being able to walk past the room and feel the “craftsman pride” when I remember us working on it.  I have a feeling we are going to be doing more projects in the future.

What was your first DIY in your home?
