Mexico City, Mexico: Ballet Folklórico de Mexico at Palacio de Bellas Artes

April 15, 2016international, travel
The Ballet Folklorico in Mexico City is a traveling dance troupe that merges culture of Mexico and history. I definitely recommend it! | via Autumn All Along

Our study abroad group went see the Ballet Folklórico de Mexico perform in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Mexico.  The seats we initially had were balcony seats, but the ticket guy said for 100 more pesos (or around $5 each) he would put us on the floor instead of the balcony.  Money well worth it.

The Ballet Folklórico de Mexico itself tells the history of the region and is a 60+ year old dance troupe.  There wasn’t a lot of information for us to read, but I made some guesses.  Mainly the ballet’s theme seems to express the nationalistic pride of people from Mexico.  I was excited about seeing the dancing, but then when I saw the interior architecture and it literally took my breath away.  I’m a big of a nerd for intricate ceiling work (see here).  This was literally the most beautiful ceilings art I have ever seen in my whole life.

The costumes were beautiful, but I don’t take photos during performances because I find the light distracting to others (and because it is one of my serious pet peeves).  So, by clicking here you can see how beautiful the costuming is and the video below I found on Youtube is great as well!

I’m not sure of the Ballet Folklórico de Mexico touring schedule, but if you’re in Mexico City make sure to visit the Palacio de Bellas Artes.  The venue is absolutely beautiful and has a open courtyard next to a park, is close to excellent restaurants, and historic architecture.

Would you have been staring more at the ballet or the architecture?
