MY SECOND TRIMESTER DIARY
Morning sickness & Nausea
13 weeks – 20 weeks
When we drove to Arkansas and back during my first trimester, we discovered I would get sick in a car sometimes multiple times in a hour. Honestly, it was pure hell. The problem? Apparently, this would stick around until about 20 weeks. Going to church which is only 8 minutes away? I’d throw up on the way. Going to the grocery store? I’d throw up on the way. Going out to eat? Great, we loaded me up with food that we spent money on that Iād vomit.
I never expected to say that I feel like in many ways my second trimester was harder than my first trimester, but it was. Every week that passed, I hoped that my morning sickness would go away and then it didn’t.
During this time, I was vomiting multiple times a day for weeks. I felt like I was on house arrest because being in a vehicle made me sick. I emailed a Doctor in the office and I was prescribed a medication that made me even sicker. I threw up on the way to the hospital, in the waiting room, and then I was told I was going to need a high risk maternity doctor as well because I was so sick. The meds caused me to throw up any liquid or food (toast, popsicles, water) within minutes of me having them. Even the smell of toast would make me vomit. I requested a different Doctor, and all of the nurses and new Doctor said I should have never been put on these meds in the first place. Needless to say, I’m never going to the Doctor who prescribed those meds to me in the first place again!
I was prescribed diclegis, which I was honestly already taking at night, but taking it during the day did make it easier. It makes my face droop and makes me very sleepy, but after how bad the previous meds made me feel I didn’t care.
I’ll be honest, I was pretty depressed during this period because I just wanted to leave my house, but I couldn’t without vomiting. It was so hot outside, it would make me vomit. Everything made me vomit! People always gave me advice assuming I wasn’t already doing A, B, or C, but I was.
20 weeks +
I will vomit in a car trip if it is more than 30 minutes and there have been a few times I have vomited with shorter trips, but thankfully it isn’t every time. If I stop taking diclegis at night, I will get sick so I am just still taking that and I allow myself to sleep all I want. I’m just so happy that things have become easier. I’ll vomit sometimes due to acid reflux or smell triggers, but it hasn’t been bad.
I’ve now been to church like two weeks in a row. I’m still pretty nauseous in mornings, but I usually just let myself sleep through them. We had 9 AM church until August, but that switched to 1 PM and that has been a ton easier. Last night, I took half a diclegis and was really nauseous so I think I’m still needing a whole one every night.
Food aversions/ cravings
For weeks, I could only keep popsicles and grilled cheese sandwiches down. From 16 weeks on, I could eat soup which was great because that was the first time I had been able to eat vegetables in a while. Now I can eat most things, but I forgo onions, garlic, and spicy hot stuff. I reaIly want cake now so I allow myself to eat a slice of cake once a week š .
Pains
I’ve had some mild sciatica. No biggie though. One day I was moving something in our house and I had a massive contraction that about knocked me to my knees and I laid down for a hour afterwords. I began having Braxton Hicks noticeably at 23 weeks and they are around all of the time now. I’m never super sure if baby E is having a party in my stomach of my body is just having a contraction party, but whatever.
I had a blood scare last week and my Doctors had me come in. It ended up being alright, but I spent most of the night before really wracked with worry. After I got home from my appointment, I had a good cry session and went back about my day.
Skin
My belly gets bigger by the day. I have a lot of stretch marks. I spend a lot of time rubbing my belly.
Weight gain
I finally started gaining weight at 20 weeks! My doctors were getting kind of worried. I have now gained about 6 pounds which I have carefully crafted with burritos, tacos, queso, and tortillas. I’m chilling out on the Mexican now though. Baby is apparently a week to a week and a half ahead size wise. I don’t know if that means she will just be a baby with rolls when she comes out or she might come a little earlier; I think it would be nice for her if she wasn’t born on Christmas week though, but I can’t imagine a better present for us either.
Autoimmune
I had my first flare up being pregnant, but my hair loss I described from my first trimester finally stopped. The photos below are from my 10 weeks pregnant versus my 20 weeks pregnant. I had been losing so much hair and I am grateful it stopped.
Devin
Devin continues to be amazing š . Since I’ve been sleeping throughout the whole night, he is sleeping really well too. He has been helping with all the nesting projects around the house, vomit bowl fetching, and has happily eaten anything in the car that I have struggled with smell wise. Devin also went to a consignment sale, and was the only guy around, to help me pick out tons of baby clothes, blankets, and he even scored a great hiking backpack!
SECOND TRIMESTER DIARY REFLECTIONS
I can’t believe I’m hitting my third trimester. I’m so, so happy that I’m feeling better, that my hair is coming back in, and I can eat a variety of foods. I’m so grateful my perinatal depression is definitely lessening (I was very open with my counselor, my Doctors, friends, and my Dad about this).
I’m very grateful to have this baby. I won’t say that I love being pregnant because I don’t, but it is comforting to know that I can take care of all of her needs and sleep right now. I’m very thankful that I’ve been feeling better, can be in a car, and I’m excited to meet our little girl in a couple of months! In the mean time, we’ll be getting stuff ready around the house and we have some baby classes to attend together.
